Meetings and Events

Events in yellow are HGCNY-sponsored events.

Date and Time: TBA (but generally Thursday evenings after zoo has closed for the day)

Location: Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park's Habitat Garden

Garden is outside zoo gates, so you don't need (or receive) zoo admission

Service Project at the Zoo - a perfect job for a Wild One!

Weeding the zoo's Habitat Garden - a demonstration garden that's an excellent public education vehicle.

It's still fairly new, so for a few years it will need some extra weeding until those native plants become established.

How to participate: Email me (at the address on the home page) and I'll send your email address to Kate W., the director of the zoo's habitat garden. She'll put you on the email list so you'll know when a weeding is being scheduled.

Location: Liverpool Library

This event is co-sponsored with Liverpool Library, who will be providing refreshments. Thank you Liverpool!!

This is the day of their big book sale, so if you come early, you might find some great books!

OUR ANNUAL SPECIAL EVENT!

Invasive Plants Series Part 2:
On Beyond Barberry and Other Invasive Plants in the Landscape
by Carol Bradford, P-S garden columnist

Becoming aware of invasive plants in natural and disturbed areas is like being hit on the head.  All of a sudden it strikes you that there is way too much of some plant somewhere, and that it doesn't belong there.  Then you start seeing them all over.  Part of the problem is that government agencies and the nursery trade continue to distribute some of these plants.  Part of the solution is to find out why people want to grow them, and to propose native alternatives that aren't weeds.

Our Annual Panel Discussion

A popular program! Here's your chance to ask questions about habitat gardening - things you encountered during the past gardening season, or things you're wondering about as you plan next year's garden.

The Panel:

Dan Carroll - Horticulturist, owner of Great Lakes Horticulture

Janet Allen - Habitat Steward for the National Wildlife Federation

Michelle Welcher - homeowner who has been converting her suburban yard to a habitat garden

Audience - our fellow habitat gardeners often have great answers based on their own habitat gardening experiences
