1. What is it?

In a nutshell, it is a vehicle for reflection and dialogue on matters of ultimacy in our lives in the context of a small, intimate, trusting group. Groups of between 6 and 10 people meet with a facilitator, in a worshipful setting, to go deeper than the typical coffee hour conversation allows, through a formatted time of open sharing and deep listening.

2. Why do we have it?

The program began almost two years ago to provide an opportunity for community building/deepening experiences for our members and friends. It is a place where people can clarify their beliefs, confront their questions, gain insights into other peoples experiences, and develop meaningful relationships.

3. Who can participate?

Anyone! There is always an empty chair at every Chalice Circle gathering to welcome the person who might be about to walk through the door. One need not be a member, or make a long-term commitment when visiting one of the Circles.

4. When do the groups meet?

The schedule listed below is somewhat fluid, so it is always best to call the office at 446-5940 to inquire/confirm meeting times and places. The newsletter typically lists the meeting times in the calendar section. The circles meet twice a month,for about 2 hours.

5. What if I cannot make it at those times?

Please let it be known that you are interested, and suggest times that might be possible for you. Again, contact the office.

6. Is it group therapy?

No, it is not. There is a time for everyone to "check-in" at the start of each session, but the groups are not designed for psychological support. The facilitators are not trained in those techniques. However, people report that they often find themselves profoundly supported both in the groups and beyond them.

7. Who leads the Chalice Circles?

Other members of the congregation serve as facilitators of a program that the minister develops and coordinates. Facilitators meet monthly with the minister to review the materials and to address any needs or concerns that emerge from the Circles.

8. What is the commitment?

Folks are welcome to visit several times. After 2 months, it is hoped that participants will be ready to make a commitment to participate on a regular basis. The groups make a basic covenant with each other, which includes consistent participation.

9. Where do the Chalice Circles meet?

Most of the time, they meet here in the church - either in the Parlor or Room 6 (next to the Parlor).

10. What do the Circles give back to the congregation?

There is a service dimension of the Chalice Circles, with the annual goal of one service project to the congregation and one to the larger community. What those projects are is not as important as the fact that members of the Circle work together toward something greater than their own needs and interests.
