Chalice Sample
These are a few statements answering the question "What do I believe?" in under a 100 words. Several people agreed to share
their statements. We did this as a two part chalice circle: the first part just talking about what is to write down beliefs
and experiences with that for those who had done it, the second circle after 2 weeks was mostly just listening to people read
their statements. I suggested adding these to our web site if anyone wanted to.

Humans are sentient creatures who can imagine future possibilities, and can take action to affect future changes. Because we
have this power, I feel an obligation to try to perceive and understand existence and our effects on it as accurately as
possible, and to plan and take action that I believe will result in the greatest good for the largest sphere of existence
that I can comprehend. I think of the combined efforts of all creatures who act in this way as God. Through these actions
that we take to change existence for the better, we are made immortal.

WHAT I BELIEVE
June, 2003 and
June, 2005
The universe exists for more than me. The universe is created for all it contains.
I do not know what intelligence created the universe. Some people call it "God."
I do not know why the universe was created, any more than the trees or birds or worms know. My cat may know.
Humanity must respect the universe. We must not damage it. We must treat other creatures, including other humans, with
compassion.
The seventh principle, the interdependent web of all existence, requires me to protect the environment. This may be the most
important and urgent task of our generation.
I do not believe God intervenes in human affairs. What we do is up to us. I believe that I, together with many people, need
a community to support our spiritual growth.

Stories

All I can do is tell you stories,
From my heart to yours,
listen and give them life.
Stories can create light,
Refracting in our gem like souls,
lightening our dark hidden places.
Stories can change perspectives,
Our ways of looking at the facts,
Sometimes even changing facts.
We can help each other,
Crafting our stories,
Finding ways untried,
Creating the greater good.
Such a community is Magic,
Sharing becomes enchantment,
Where those on stage and not are one.
What I believe
The Tag line: I am a spiritual omnivore.
What this means:
I believe that we humans should share a common goal of making our selves better people and making our world work.
If
there is a higher being that created all of this for us, I struggle with the concept that such a being would lay out
one and only one right way to travel. The diversity inherent in nature speaks against that concept. I believe that many
people in many different cultures have hit on what humans need to do to be better for this world. UU allows me to
learn
openly from all of them.
