First UU is run by a system of committees, as listed below:
The Adult Programming and Religious Education Committee coordinates and offers programs for assigned Sundays and courses, workshops, and lectures to serve the religious education needs of adults in the church.
The Building and Grounds Committee plans and coordinates a maintenance program for the church and provides a safe, attractive and efficient facility for members and other users. B & G also sponsors Fall and Spring Clean-up Parties, and oversees the cleaning service.
The Canvass Committee coordinates communication to all members and friends of the Society for a pledge of financial commitment for the coming year to support the church and its programs.
The Caring Committee offers support and care (cards, visits, food, assistance) to members of the church community in times of need, and organizes a gift distribution program to shut-ins during the holidays.
The Compensation and Benefits Committee oversees personnel/employment matters, initiates performance reviews of staff, and makes recommendations regarding salaries and benefits for the next year.
The Committee on Ministry supports the ministry of the congregation in personal and denominational concerns, issues and ideas.
The Denominational Affairs Committee links First UU with our sister churches in the CNY cluster group, the St. Lawrence district and the national UU Association by keeping the congregation informed about UU happenings beyond our own walls.
The Finance Committee advises the Board of Trustees concerning matters requiring financial and business expertise, such as the annual budget, banking and investment. Finance oversees activities of the Financial Secretary, Bookkeeper, Montessori communication and fundraising.
The Funds and Fellowship Committee organizes many of the social events and fundraisers in the church community, such as dinners, Sunday potlucks, holiday parties, etc. The committee works with others to prepare and serve refreshments after Sunday worship services.
The Green Sanctuary Committee supports congregational efforts to affirm and support our 7th principle: "Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part."
The History Committee organizes, maintains, and preserves records and items of interest to the Society. History coordinates communication and display of historical matter for the church community.
The Information Technology Group (as part of Building and Grounds) oversees all matters relating to maintenance and upgrades of computer technology, including hardware, software, website, and database needs.
The Long Range Planning Committee monitors progress on existing long range plans, facilitates the development of new long range projects when necessary, and brainstorms solutions to congregational needs based on input from the board, committees and the membership.
The Membership Committee welcomes and integrates new and prospective members into the church community. Greets newcomers, staffs the newcomer's corner, and hosts events for newcomers and new members.
The Music Committee oversees all matters relating to music and musical presentations in the church in conjunction with the Music Director, and assists with the MD's annual performance review.
The Nominating Committee prepares a slate of candidates for officers and Board Trustees of the Society.
The Social Justice Committee makes the congregation aware of local and national social issues and proposes possible courses of individual and corporate action. Coordinates an annual community outreach appeal, and oversees Task Force activities.
The Trust Committee oversees the investment and expenditures of our endowment funds.
The Worship Services Committee facilitates all aspects of the Sunday morning worship service, including chancel set-up and decoration, coordination of the ushers and greeters, and leading worship services when the minister is away. The WSC also coordinates and offers all summer services.
The Youth Religious Education Committee prepares and implements a religious education program for the youth of the church in collaboration with the Director of Religious Education.
