Program IV: Adult Education

Program of Study Requirements and Options

The Adult Education Master's degree is designed for persons in business, industry, human service agencies, health-related institutions, and higher education who are responsible for administering, designing, and/or conducting training programs for adults. Careers in adult education include positions such as staff developer in community agencies, human resource specialist or director of training and development in business and industry, in-service education coordinator of health professionals, cooperative extension agent, volunteer coordinator, senior citizen program director, and continuing education instructor, to name a few. This program provides a course of study leading to the degree of Master of Science in Education with an emphasis in Adult Education.

1. EDU 5900 Research Methods and Materials (3 credits). This course must be taken within the first 12 credits of course work not including transfer credit.

2. Core Requirements:

A minimum of 18 credit hours, including at least 6 credits from each core area. All courses are 3 credit hours unless otherwise stated.

3. Related Electives:

Electives or up to six transfer credits are subject to approval and/or advisor permission. See the graduate catalog for a listing of approved electives and the minimal number of electives required.

4. Capstone (3-6 credits)

Complete one of the "Capstone" options described in the graduate catalog upon completion of no fewer than 27 credits of course work (such as the AED 6000 Graduate Seminar: Adult Education or a Masters thesis or project).

* The Training of Trainers Graduate Certificate Program: Training of Trainers is a certificate program for persons who are responsible for helping adults learn. The program is designed to prepare persons to administer, design, and/or conduct training programs for adults. Participants may develop programs for employees in business, industry, and health-related institutions; for students and teachers engaged in continuing education; and for volunteers, clients, and professionals in community-based organizations. The six one-credit workshops are designed to be taken in sequence, AED 5071-AED 5076. Typically, they are taught on alternative Saturdays, two Saturdays for each one-credit course, with AED 5071-37 offered during the fall term and AED 5074-76 offered during the winter term. A certificate is awarded to students who successfully complete all six of the workshops for credit with a minimum 3.0 grade point average. The Training of Trainers workshops may be taken as part of the Master of Science in Education degree, Program IV: Adult Education.
