Roger Hiemstra began his work with adult learners in the early-sixties as a County Extension Agent for the Iowa Cooperative Extension Service. He obtained the Masters in Extension Education from Iowa State University in 1967 and the Ph.D. in Community Adult Education from the University of Michigan in 1970. He served as professor of adult education at the University of Nebraska (1970-1976), as professor and chair of adult education at Iowa State University (1976-1980), and as professor and chair of adult education at Syracuse University from 1980-1992. He retired from SU in 1996 and is Professor Emeritus there.

Currently he is Professor, Adult Education, Elmira College, and a professional consultant on adult learning and distance education topics. He has served as the editor for two national adult education journals and is past president of the Commission of Professors of Adult Education. Rog has focussed his scholarship on identifying teaching implications and community resources related to self-directed learning. He has authored or co-authored numerous articles, chapters, and books including Professional Writing, The Educative Community, Self-Direction in Adult Learning, Individualizing Instruction, and Facilitating Ethical Practice in the Education and Training of Adults (in-process). Professor Hiemstra received the 1999 Graduate Excellence-in-Teaching award from Elmira College and was inducted into the International Adult and Continuing Education Hall of Fame in 2000.
