Kingdom of AEthelmearc Equestrian Company

  1. PURPOSE: The promotion of participation in and study of equestrian activities and subjects, particularly the historical role and utilization of equines in the time period spanned by the Society for Creative Anachronism.

  2. MEMBERSHIP: While abiding in the Kingdom of AEthelmearc, anyone of any realm is welcome to participate in equestrian activities, should they share in our desire to study and develop skill in the areas of horsemanship, equine studies, and related arts and sciences, and are willing to abide by Society, Kingdom, and Company laws.

  3. BADGE: ?

  4. STRUCTURE: The Company is administered by the Equestrian Marshallate, consisting of all resident(?) authorized Equestrian Marshals within the Kingdom of AEthelmearc. The individuals must meet the following minimum criteria:

    1. They must be a current member of the Society for Creative Anachronism.
    2. They must be willing and capable of fulfilling the requirements of their office in the Equestrian Company.

    1. Kingdom Equestrian Officer (KEO), (Company Captain).
      1. reports quarterly to the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Society Deputy Marshal for Equestrian Affairs on Company activities and its officers.
      2. sends a quarterly courtesy report to the Kingdom Seneschal on Company activities and its officers.
      3. must be a resident equestrian marshal.
        1. Have a working knowledge of SCA-wide and AEthelmearc regulations.
      4. investigates, handles and reports any Incident or Infraction of SCA or Kingdom rules.
        1. In the event of an Incident or Infraction, the KEO will generate an oral report within 24 hours followed by a written report within 72 hours to both the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the SCA Deputy for Equestrian Activities, delineating the circumstances of the Incident or Infraction, the measures taken to rectify the situation, and any sanctions performed.
      5. stores all legal Equestrian documents, including but not limited to, all incident and infraction reports, and copies of insurance forms.
      6. the office carries a two year term, with one renewal.

    2. Deputy to KEO, (Lieutenant). Aids and assists KEO.

    3. Chronicler.
      1. serves as editor of newsletter
      2. keeps minutes of meetings of Company
      3. maintains a phone/mailing list of all current Company members, and provides it to all Seneschals.
      4. maintains website.

    4. Scorekeeper.
      1. keeps records of all tournament scores.

  5. REGIONAL MARSHALS, (Sergeants): The KEO shall set up a core of regional marshals and see to the training of same such that each region of the Kingdom has an equestrian marshal trained and knowledgeable in the AEthelmearc equestrian rules and safety procedures. These persons will be equestrian marshals. These persons shall be chosen by the KEO based on their horse experience, SCA equestrian marshal training, and good communication skills. They will report directly to the KEO. If there is any region in which there is no interest in equestrian activities, then that region need not have a regional marshal until there is need and a person to fill that position. They shall serve as health and safety advisors for their region, advise the Company on all veterinary concerns, mistreatment of animals, vaccinations, etc. They shall maintain a file of all required health records and waivers of the equestrians in their region.

  6. EQUESTRIAN MARSHALS: The primary requirements for an Equestrian Marshal are skill with horses, diplomacy, common sense, and self-control. An EM from another Kingdom may marshal at an AEthelmearc equestrian event as long as they adhere to and uphold all of the Equestrian Regulations of the Kingdom, with the permission of the Equestrian Marshal-in-Charge of that event. 

    1. Must have ridden as an Advanced Rider in a minimum of three mounted events within the past two years.
      1. if physically unable to ride, demonstrate that they have sufficient experience and knowledge of horses by acting as a probationary EM for 3 different equestrian events under at least 4 authorized EM’s.
    2. demonstrate competency and knowledge of horses to two authorized Equestrian Marshals.
    3. pass a written quiz (with minimum 70%) on SCA and AEthelmearc Equestrian Rules.
    4. must maintain their warrant by marshaling at a minimum of one official equestrian event every 2 years.
    5. Special Level Equestrian Marshals (Driving, Mounted Archery) shall be appointed by the KEO upon the recommendation of the Regional Marshals.

  7. EQUESTRIAN MARSHALS-IN-TRAINING: An EMIT is an individual who has met all criteria delineated:
    1. Must be an authorized Advanced Level rider.
    2. Must demonstrate competency and knowledge of horses to one warranted EM.
    3. Must be under the supervision of a warranted EM while fufilling their duties.
    4. May NOT be a Minor (under 18 years of age).

  8. GROUP COMPANY HEADS: Each group within AEthelmearc, be it Barony, Dominion, Canton, College, Shire, or Incipient Shire may create a subgroup of the Company. The subgroup shall be called "The Equestrian Company of (group name)". They shall elect an authorized Equestrian Marshal as Company head who will report on activities to their regional marshal at least quarterly. They are bound by all rules governing the Company.

  9. DUTIES: The Company assumes the following as those duties by which it seeks to fulfill its purpose, and by no means limits itself to these alone:
    1. To further equestrian activities in AEthelmearc.
    2. To teach classes on equestrian related topics at Arts and Sciences collegiums whenever possible.
    3. To hold no less than two meetings per year, at the Pennsic War and the Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon, of the Marshallate, said meetings to be announced in the above publications in a timely manner.
    4. To plan and find sponsorship for an annual Kingdom equestrian practice/workshop to be announced in AESTEL, the Company newsletter, and on the Company webpage in a timely manner. 

  10. PROCEDURES: All decisions regarding changes in policy, rule changes, or changes in weapons or equipment standards will require the approval the Equestrian Marshallate.

  11. MEETINGS: Anyone interested in the Equestrian Company may attend meetings; however, only the Marshallate has voting privileges.
