EASTER 7C
May 20, 2007
- This prayer, shortly prior to Jesus' death, has been called Jesus' High Priestly Prayer, because he intercedes with God in behalf of the disciples, present and future. It has also been suggested that this, rather than the "Our Father," should be known as the Lord's Prayer, because this is the prayer in which Jesus pours out his heart. The "Our Father" would be better called The Model Prayer or The Disciple's Prayer. Others refer to the John 17 prayer as Jesus' Last Will and Testament, because it represents Jesus' provision for the disciples on the eve of his death. Soffregen
- Here, in the afterglow of EAster, just before Pentecost, let us meditate upon the peculiar glory of Jesus and the peculiar glory that he calls us to bear. Willimon
-As Jesus prayed, he was teaching the disciples and us about the importance of Christian unity.
-And this time the Lectionary committee gets it just right in pairing this Gospel prayer of Jesus with the last fervent prayer petition of all of scripture: "Maranatha! Come, Lord Jesus!" These final words of Scripture from Revelation, in which Jesus assures us that he is coming soon, are also addressed to a people of God who find themselves in moments of great tribulation at the hands of the Roman Empire.
- Al three scriptures have something to say about the dangerous world in which we live.
-Unity does not mean sameness. It means similarity of purpose, of intention, of allegiance and of behavior towards one another. It means accepting. For those who believe, it means gathering under the canopy of creation and being part of a great singleness of purpose Rev. Anthony Jewiss
-Jesus Christ, who calls us to unity greater than the sum of our selves. It is a unity made both possible and perfect by the extravagant and abundant love of God.Rev. Anthony Jewiss
-"The unity that prevails when God, Christ, and believers abide each in the other has as its primary purpose the evangelization of the world" (Craddock, 270).

sermon: "By-Products"We produce happiness but joy is a by-product of our relationship with God//Jesus
We have deep feelings for people but agape is a by-product " "
We produce temporary peace but real peace " " "
We produce religion but faith is a " " "
Our greatest blessings are a result of this union.

-Advocates of the ecumenical movement cite these verses to justify their work.
-"They Will Know We
Are Christians"
We are one in the Spirit, We are one in the Lord
We are one in the Spirit, We are one in the Lord
And we pray that unity may one day be restored, (to refrain)
Refrain
And they'll know we are Christians by our
love, by our love,
Yes they'll know we are Christians by our
love.
- An understanding of "being one" is that we are all equal to one another.
- There is no virtue in community or unity in or of itself. Think of the herd mentality of people during war time.
-We recognize an old truth-the greatest differences in the world are never between people who believe different things, but between people who believe in the same things and differ in their interpretation.
-Relationships are both horizontal and vertical
-One of the qualities of love - true love that is - the love of Christ - is that it is self-limiting
Human beings don't create community as much as they are created by it. Human being is by nature communal being. Community supersedes the appearance and disappearance of the individual. -Craig B. Anderson-this text speaks to us "future Christians" that we may be "one." However, the prayer itself implies that we are in fact, not one.
- A part or apart?
- Unity is diversity. The part s may not look alike, perform alike but all work towards same end.
-
sermon Wrong reasons to serve God: guilt, salvation, no one else will do it, pride or ego, please people. (all these may lead to disunity) Howard Travis- The whole message of Christianity is about relationship
-"There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all" (Eph.4:3-6)
- Invisible threads are the strongest ties
- Attitude towards self parallels all relationships.
- Takes less energy to pigeon hole people than to know them in their own right
-Questions related to this are: "Are we to wait for God to perfect our unity?" or "Has our unity already been perfected by God and God is waiting for us to realize it?" What are the roles God plays in creating our unity? What are the roles we need to play in creating (or actualizing) that unity?

I Can Be a Christian By Myself. The first verse goes:I can be a Christian by myself. Leave my dusty Bible on the shelf. I 'll sing a hymn and pray a bit. God can do the rest of it. My heart's the church, my head's the steeple. Shut the door and I'm the people. I can be a Christian by myself.
Some of the other verses include these lines: I'll break some bread and drink some wine. Have myself a holy time. I'll take the offering then I'll know Where that money's gonna go. So please remember, Lord, when I die, Give me my own cloud in the sky. After this life with its labors Don't bug me with needy neighbors. Avery and Marsh- When we know only the surfaces of people we see difference; when we know deeper in, we see
similarities.
- poetry
He drew a circle to shut me out. Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout
but love and I had the wit to win, we drew a circle that took him in.
- The presence of community does not mean absence of differences.
- Snowflakes leaves humans , plants ,raindrops, stars, molecules, all come in communities. The singular cannot exist. Paula Guam Allen
- Our differences are physical. Spiritually, there are no differencs
- We are all in one world and there are interconnections everywhere. P.R. Wilkinson
- All relationships are ultimately a relationship with God. Chopra
- Yin and Yang The union is stronger than when separated.
- "Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand" (Matt. 12: 25).
- Spirit is relationship
- Sometimes, love, friendship, respect, do not unite people as much as a common hatred for something.

1. "As I was eating breakfast one morning, I overheard two oncologists discussing the papers they were to present that day at the American Association of Clinical Oncology. One was complaining bitterly, 'You know Bob, I just don't understand it. You and I use the same drugs, the same dosage, the same schedule, and the same entry criteria. Yet, I got a 22% response rate, and you got a 74% percent. That's unheard of for a metastatic lung cancer! How do you do it?' The other doctor responded, 'We're both using Etoposide, Platinol, Oncovin, and Hydroxyurea. You call yours EPOH. I tell my patients I'm giving them HOPE. Sure, I tell them this is experimental, and we go over the long list of side effects together. But, I tell them that we have a chance. As dismal as the statistics are for this thing, there are always those who do really well.'" Dr. William Buckholtz
2. Spider web. analogy of community. see Buechner's ,Hungering dark. Touch one part of the web and the whole trembles. unity
3. Geese: Fly in formation to make use of "uplift draft " from each other. Pointer bird goes to back when tired and another bird replaces him. If bird falls out of formation because of fatigue or illness, two geese will drop out of formation and go to fly back (in formation ) with recovered bird.
HUMOR
- Don't join a perfect church because if you do it won't be perfect anymore.
- A mother was serving pancakes to her two sons who began arguing about who would get the first pancakes. The mother asked the boys what they thought Jesus would do? When
the boys didn't answer the mother said Jesus would have said, "Please let my brother have the first pancake, I can wait." In reply, the older brother turned to his younger brother and said,
"You be Jesus."
