 SCRIPTURES

Jeremiah 2:4-13
Psalm 81:1, 10-16 (16)
Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16
Luke 14:1, 7-14

First Jesus heals a man with dropsy on a Sabbath when he was being closely watched by those who were trying to determine who and what he was. He acted unexpectedly and according to some of the guests erroneously.

Second, Jesus assuming the role of authority among the guests gives a teaching about humility, right behavior when invited to a meal. A teaching about exaltation, true hospitality and social exchange.

In the third section, is of a parable about the great dinner--the banquet of the Kingdom and those who are invited, those who come and those who do not. The fourth part of the chapter describes the cost of Discipleship and challenges the hearers to respond

-Emerson's "representative capacity" is what I'm working around...the idea that we, our institutions, churches, etc. all represent something. (stand for something). The great and long-lasting ones succeeded because of the high principals they representd. "Kingdom people", which I think Jesus is really interested in in the Luke scripture (not ordinary adolescent types) "Kingdom people" are motivated by principle, not reward, success, money, etc. It's our willingness to use our 'representative capacity' for high principles that make us "kingdom people" . Lindy

-Don't you find it curious that the only one who left the banquet "healed" was the man who suffered from dropsey (he was not one of the "guests"), and that man was sent away before the Pharisees and scribes (i.e., church elite) got the lecture... Carol in Michigan

-Today, we all sit at the banquet table. God has not only invited us, but the weary, the maimed, the poor and the lonely as well. God has created a fabulous table, filled with the abundance of life's precious gifts of healing and wholeness, welcoming and affirming who we are, now. At this table, we know we will not leave hungry or hurt, but Christ's friendship and hospitality will be extended to everyone. So at this table we are filled with God's love and grace, freely given and poured out to all. Patricia de Jong

-In the cartoon strip, Dennis the Menace, Dennis says about Mrs. Wilson: "She gives you a cookie because she's nice, not because you're nice."

-An example from the monkey: The higher it climbs, the more you see of its behind.

-Sir Alec Guiness once said, "A person who is keen to shake your hand usually has something up his sleeve." He was talking about the way some people's appearance differ from their motives.

- A minister sitting in his study one day when a strange man came in to see him.  The man was wearing a large black hat that had turkey feathers sticking out of it everywhere.  And over each ear he had dangling a piece of raw bacon.  He sat down and said, "Preacher, I need to talk to you about my brother, Bob.  He ain't right in the head." ILLUSTRATIONS

-In a "Peanuts" cartoon the terrible-tempered Lucy approaches her brother Linus, who is watching television.   Linus says to Lucy, "I was here first, so I get to watch what I want."  Without another word, Lucy marches to the television set and switches to the channel of her program. Linus protests with a "Hey!" Lucy assumes her know-it-all stance and proclaims, "In the 19th chapter of the book of Matthew it says, 'Many that are first will be last, and the last first.'" Linus' response is, "I'll bet Matthew didn't have an older sister!"

-In a high school band, the best player gets "first chair," and then the others descend through "second chair," "third chair," and so on based on their skill.  In band, it's appropriate to compete for "first chair," but in the kingdom of God, we are to have a servant spirit.  Jesus says take the last place in a spirit of humility.  Mickey Anders

-I was visiting once in a hospital that was undergoing major renovations.  I needed to get to one of the upper rooms, but the elevators were not working then.  I came to a  hallway

and knew that all I had to was go up one flight of steps to get to where I

needed to be, but the stairs were blocked off.  A sign there said,

"To go up you

must go down

the stairs.

At the bottom

Of the stairs

Directions."

I couldn't help but think of that when I read today's Gospel lesson about the

scribes and Pharisees. Seems to me Jesus is saying quite similar, "Sometimes

the only way up is down."   Bass Mitchel

-a couple who were making wedding plans, and went to an expensive hotel to plan their reception - a dinner of finest food, using the best china, plants, big band, the works. laid out $30,000. Then the groom got cold feet, and called the wedding off. the would-be bride was furious! She went to cancel the party only to be consoled but told, "you signed a contract. you can either give up the money or go ahead and have a party." the woman thought about it, and decided, having once been homeless and down on her luck, to have that party. She sent her invitations to all the homeless shelters and mission places in Boston and they partied with the tuxedoed waiters and everything. the only change she made: she changed the meat to boneless chicken in honor of the groom. Phillip Yancey
