Merritt's Monthly

April

Message From Mrs. Merritt

April is Environmental Month.  This month we will be doing many activities designed to help the children learn about our environment and to develop an appreciation for it.  Take a walk around your neighborhood and talk about things that could be improved. Help your child plant a tree or flowers and make them responsible for caring for it.  Take care of our Earth.  It's the only Earth we have!  You're never too little to make a difference!

Reading

The Accelerated Reading program is going very well.  The kids are reading like crazy with your help!  I am very proud of them!  Many children have already earned 30 points for the year.  The Accelerated Reading goal for this month is 4 points. It’s a short month, so get an early start.  Continue to spend at least 15-20 minutes each night reading with your child.  Keep Reading!

 Math

We are reviewing  carrying and borrowing (regrouping) into the hundreds.  We will be working with three and four digit numbers.  Give your child a few problems to practice every night.  Quick recall of the basic addition and subtraction facts is essential to this process.  We have also begun a unit on patterning numbers into the thousands.  If your child has not yet mastered telling time or counting money, please try to practice with them at home.

Science

We will be learning

about our environment this month and the effect pollution has on wildlife.  We will also be discussing the importance of clean air, land and water and ways each person can help to improve it. Plan some activities with your child to help improve the environment in your neighborhood.

Review : Good Nutrition and Healthy Habits

Social Studies

Our class will be learning about maps and globes and how to use them.  When you travel, let your child read the map and give you directions using north, south, east and west.  Take a walk around your neighborhood and help your child create a map.  Use symbols and label streets and other things.  Include a map key. We will also be discussing our government and how it works.
