Merritt's Monthly

December

Message From Mrs. Merritt

December is a very busy month.  The second grades will be involved in doing many activities related to the school-wide theme of Caring and Sharing.  We are planning a fund raising activity to earn money to purchase food for needy families.  More information will be coming soon.

Continue to read with your child each night.  Parent participation and interest makes a significant difference in a child's education.  Keep up the good work! Get an early start reading, this is another short month.

Reading

Our unit for this holiday month is entitled Caring and Sharing.  We will be reading and sharing stories about people who do wonderful things for people they care about.  This is the season to talk about giving with your child.  Encourage your child to give of themselves and spend some time with someone who is lonely.  Also help your child think of gifts that can be made instead of purchased.  Give the gift of love.

Math

Continue to review math facts with your child, especially, subtraction facts.  We are beginning a unit on money and telling time.   Have your child count your spare change often.  Show your child that there are many ways to make the same amount.  Let your child buy a few things at the store.   Let your child predict about how much they will cost.  Be sure to include tax.  Discuss telling time.  Ask them what time it is often.  Give them a list of chores to do at specific times during the day.

Science

We will be finishing up our animal unit.  We will discuss animal homes and their habitats.  We will then be discussing weather and what causes it.  We will learn about the water cycle.  We also discuss how weather influences the way people live.  We will even discuss what causes “Lake Effect” snow!

 Social Studies

We will be reviewing the names of the continents and ocean land formations such as islands, peninsulas, mountains etc.  We will also be discussing Christmas customs around the world.  Our next unit is entitled Needs and Wants.  Food, shelter, clothing and love are some of our basic needs.  Have your child separate their Christmas list into needs and wants.
