Message
From Mrs. MerrittWe will be having our Valentine's Party on Friday, February 14th. Please help your child create a mailbox to receive valentines in and send it in next week. Be creative! I will be sending home a class list soon. Valentines may be brought in next week. Please continue to read with your child every night for at least 15 minutes and ask them a few questions about the book. Remember if your child is bringing home Accelerated Reading books that are consistently too hard or too easy, please let me know. The entire class has also reached a total of 10 or more points, which is the goal for the first half of the year, and everyone will be participating in the Movie Day on February 7th from 1:45 – 3:00. Keep up the good work!
ReadingThe Terra-Nova Tests will be administered next week. Be sure your child gets plenty of rest and eats a good breakfast everyday. Please send in a fresh supply of #2 pencils with your child.
We will begin a unit called Exploring Our World. We will be reading a variety of non-fiction books and doing some experiments. Feel free to send in all non-fiction books for your child to share with the class.

Review telling time and counting money. Many children need extra help with these concepts. Give them a variety of coins to count every day. Practice telling time in a variety of ways. (i.e., 3:55 or five minutes to 4, 2:15 or quarter after 2) Also review carrying and borrowing (regrouping) with your child. Give your child a few problems to practice every night. Quick recall of basic math facts is very helpful in this process.
ScienceFebruary is Dental Health Month. Review good dental practices with your child. Have your child keep a daily tooth brushing chart. A dentist will be visiting our class sometime this month to discuss how to properly care for our teeth. We will also begin a unit on the human body.
Social
StudiesWe finished a unit about needs and wants. Your child should understand what income is and how budgets get created. We will also be reviewing continents, oceans, land formations and map reading skills. We will be learning about the lives of Abraham Lincoln and George Washington this month. They played a very important role in our nation's history. We will be discussing the importance of honesty, loyalty, and responsibility.
