Merritt's Monthly
January

Message From Mrs. Merritt

I hope everyone enjoyed their Christmas vacation and is rested and ready to start the New Year.  We have had a great year so far and we still have many interesting and exciting things to do.

Please be sure your child is prepared to go outside every day.  The children will need hats, mittens, and boots.  The lunch monitors will be taking them outside after lunch whenever the weather allows.

I will also be taking them outside for playtime occasionally.  They will need to bring in snow pants on those days.  I will tell the children in advance.

Reading

We will be exploring the theme Working Together.  We will be reading several stories about people who are alike and different in many ways, yet they come to realize that everyone has something unique and  special to contribute.  The children will have ample opportunities to work together on a variety of projects.  They will be expected to cooperate and learn to make compromises with each other.  The most important thing that you can do to help your child become an independent, competent and confident reader is to set aside 15 to 20 minutes each night and have your child read his library books aloud to you.  You will also want to spend some time reading to your child and discussing books that you have read.  You will not only be making a significant contribution to your child’s education but you may even begin to look forward to that special time every night.  Have fun reading!

Math

At this point in the year, a score of 50 on the weekly addition and subtraction time tests should be easily attainable by your child.  If not, nightly practice is essential.  We will be working on place value, adding and subtracting with regrouping, telling time and counting money.

Science

We will be studying Matter and Energy.  We will learn about the three states of matter and how they can change.  We will also be learning about Machines and Electricity and how they affect our everyday lives.

Social Studies

This month will be discussing Rules and Laws.  We will also discuss how Martin Luther King Jr. impacted our society.

Review: Names of continents and oceans.  Look at maps and globes.  Take an imaginary trip around the world using names of continents and oceans.
