Message From Mrs. Merritt

March is here already! Your child needs to earn only four Accelerated Reading points this month to qualify for a free pizza.  This is the last month for the Pizza Hut Incentive Program.  Remember if your child is bringing home Accelerated Reading books that are consistently too hard or too easy, please let me know.  The children’s reading and writing skills continue to improve.  We have learned a lot and have had fun doing it.  Our theme for this month is wellness and teamwork/cooperation.

Reading

We have been reading some non-fiction books and doing some interesting experiments.  We will begin a unit on biographies.  Each child will be asked to read a biography and dress-up as that famous person and give an oral report. Then they will be required to write their own autobiography.

Math

Review carrying and borrowing with your child.   Some children continue to have problems learning their subtraction facts.  It is vital that they are able to easily recall these facts by third grade.  We will be starting a unit on graphing, patterns, and measurement. 

Science

This month is Wellness Month.  We will begin learning about the human body and fun ways to keep it healthy.  We will have an opportunity to attend an aerobics class and do other fitness activities.  This will be a fun unit.

Social Studies

We will be learning about our government this month.  We will talk about rules and laws.  We will also discuss citizenship and how to be a good American.  We will talk about ways to solve local community problems and learn how taxes help everyone in the community.
