Merritt's Monthly

May

Message From Mrs. Merritt

May is an exciting month.  Spring is here, soccer has started, and the bugs are out!  The Accelerated Reading Program is continuing.  It is important that your child continue to read orally each evening.  Remember to ask your child a few questions before, during and after reading the book.    Don't forget those math facts!

We have been learning about our environment.  Each child can make a difference in their environment.  Take care of our world, it's the only one we have.

Reading

We are completing a unit about mysteries.  We will be exploring the theme Adventures.  We will be reading many fiction and non-fiction books about different kinds of adventures.  Visit the Public Library and help your child sign out some exciting adventure books.  Talk about adventures you have been on.  Visit someplace new.  Let your child lead the way.  Take a walk in a new city.  Point out interesting things you see along the way.  Try a new food, eat at a new restaurant or take a drive on some backcountry roads.  Be adventurous!  Have some fun.

Math

Review addition and subtraction facts, counting money, telling time, counting numbers into the hundreds, carrying and borrowing.  Work on word problems that make your child decide if they need to add or subtract.  Practice multiple step problems.  For example:  You have 84 cents.  You buy items for 37 cents and 29 cents.  How much money do you have left?  We will finish fractions and begin multiplication this month.

Science

We will be reviewing our unit on animals.  We will discuss:

 1. Birds, insects, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, and fish.

2. How animals care for their young.

3. What a habitat is.

4. How pollution affects animals.

We will be writing research reports using many different library resources.  Remind your child to stay away from strange and unfamiliar animals.

We will also be reviewing plants and growing some flowers and vegetables in our room.

Social Studies

We will be reviewing the meaning of all the holidays.  We will discuss veterans and others who have died.  Ask your child why he or she is proud and lucky to be an American.  The children will have a chance to make up a holiday of their own.  They need to decide how, when, and why they would celebrate it.
