3200m Relay Team Captures 4th in State in Class B
(Mike Albanese, Chris Cimino, Devon Scholl, Mike Van Deusen)

State Meet Results
See the photo gallery for pictures of the state meet.

On an extremely hot Saturday afternoon, the Bears finished the season in style capturing a total of 6 medals. At race time the temperature soared to 90 degrees on the cloudless day with the track surface at 110 degrees.

Mike Albanese brought home two medals for the Bears, one in the steeplechase and the other as a member of the 4x800m relay team. Fresh off of his school record performance in the steeplechase, Mike finished 5th in Class B with a time of 10:07. Mike started his kick a little too late and was only a few seconds away for 3rd place. Under the extremely hot conditions, Mike turned in a fine performance finishing 17th in NYS. Great job Mike, your best runner days are still to come in college! Thanks Mike, you've given us many great memories.

Brian Baldwin qualified for the 200m semifinals finishing second in his heat on Friday night. On Saturday, Brian ran a strong heat and finished 4th in Class B. His time of 23.1 was good enough for 14th overall in NYS. Great job Brian! Work with Miss Henry on your start this summer and you'll be right there.

The 4x800 team of Devon Scholl, Mike Van Deusen, Mike Albanese and Chris Cimino fortuitously found their way into the state meet thanks to a violation of a "silly rule". And they didn’t disappoint the fans finishing 4th in Class B with a time of 8:13.18, the second fastest in school history. Split times were approximately 2:02.5 (Scholl), 2:05.3 (Van Deusen), 2:03.4 (Albanese) and 2:01.5 (Cimino). Cimino’s 2:01.5 is a PR and his first time under 2:02. Great job gentlemen!

Ryan Wells started out strong in the 1600m and finished in 4:35. Ryan’s effort was good enough for 8th in Class B. Nice job Ryan!

It was a fun season, winning 3 Section 3 championships. Congratulations to Mr. Muller, Mr. Clark and Miss Henry. I’m looking forward to next season. Set your goals and work hard to achieve them. Work starts this summer even for you soccer players Scholl. Some goals I see as realistic for next year:

bulletCimino under 1:58 in the 800m
bulletScholl under 1:58 in the 800m and under 4:25 in the 1600m
bulletWells under 4:25 in the 1600m and under 9:30 in the 3200m
bulletBaldwin under 22.5 in the 200m and under 2:02 in the 800m (YES, the 800m)
bulletChief under 9:50 in the 3200m
bulletFrank and Josh under 4:50 in the 1600m and under 10:30 in the 3200m
bullet4x800m team under 8:04

State Quals
Mike Albanese captured the steeplechase in a time of 10:05.8 setting a new school record.   Mike's time was the fastest of the day for all classes and allows him to advance to the state meet on Saturday.  Mike's appearance at the state meet was his third of the year and 5th in the last two years.  The 4 time section III champion was also the only individual winner for the Bears and is seated 5th in class B at the state meet.   Look for Mike to finish at or near the top of class B.

Brian Baldwin ran a strong 200m to qualify for the state meet based on time.  Brian closed hard in the final stretch and was clocked in a time of 22.94.   Brian is positioned well to place in the top 6 of the state class B individuals.

The 4x100m and 4x800m teams both ran strong races only to finish second in their events.  Unfortunately, second was not good enough to advance to the states, at least not under normal circumstances.  The 4x800m ran a season best 8:17 and was out kicked by Skaneatles.

Violating team rules, Poppenger of Skaneatles was disqualified from the 1600m and the 4x800m.  Since Ryan Wells finished with the next fastest time, Ryan will advance to run the open 1600m.  Coach Reed of Skaneatles made an extremely sportsman like move when he pulled his team from the 4x800m allowing Chittenango to take their place.  I am sure that this was a very difficult decision since Coach Reed's son was a member of their team. Hats off to Coach Reed, Chittenango will not disappoint the crowd.

New Hartford Invitational
On a picture perfect night the New Hartford Invitational lived up to its billing playing host to the best athletes in CNY.  The highlight of the evening was Aaron Emery's 9:16 3200m run.  Aaron set a meet record and turned in one of the fastest times in the state this season.

The Bear's had a strong showing in spite of the fact that the team was split between New Hartford and the Madison County Meet.  The nine man team turned in an impressive 4th place finish.  The highlights for the Bear's included:

- Brian Baldwin 2nd place finish (22.9) in the open 200m

- Brad Thomas 5th and 6th place finishes in the shot put (45' +)and the discus (132' +)

JD Duel Meet
On a cold night in April, the Bears traveled to JD for their second duel meet of the season.  In what was supposed to be the toughest challenge for the boys in the B-1 division, the Bears made quick work of JD defeating them 117 to 26.  JD scored a total of only 6 points on the track.  The Girls also ran well winning 85 to 47 in what could prove to be the league championship meet.

Pacing the Boys was Mike Albanese's strong performance in the 3200m event.   Mike ran a 9:59.5 to record the fastest time in the last 15 years for the Bears.   Mike's performance places him 9th on the all-time school record list.  Joe Williams was second posting a time of 10:38 nearly breaking his PR.  Joe continues to improve from week to week and should be sub 10:30 in the near future.  Frank Sitinik smashed his PR in the 1600m event by more than 10 seconds.  Frank cruised to a 5:07 in his first attempt this season.  Only 7 more seconds  to go Frank!  Great job.

The Girls were paced by three-time winner Allison Stankavage.  Stankavage won the 400LH, 200m and the long jump.  A strong performance was also turned in by the 3200m relay team of Brzuszkiewicz, Wieczorrek, Phillipps, and Berger defeating a tough JD team.
