My 1940 Chevy Restoration

Other Projects

Wheel Project:  I have finally decided to go with original Artillery Style wheels. My twist on this is I am going to have them widened at Stockton Wheel. I had pretty much made up my mind to get Wheel Vintiques Billet Artillery wheels, but got side tracked when a really nice set of 16 inch artillery wheels presented themselves to me from another person on www.stovebolt.com .  I was hoping to change these rims from 16 inch to 15 inch rims. 15 inch rims offer way more tire options. Two issues came up. The 15 inch rims don't fit over the disc brakes in the front and the centers of the original wheels force a 16 inch rim. I am still going forward with the project.

After talking to Frank at Stockton wheel I needed to box up the wheels and send them to California. As I was preparing to do this, I noticed for the first time two of the five rims had broken hub cap clips. MY resolution was to take two from the worst rim and transfer them over to the better rim. I was going to weld them on but after talking to a number of people decided 1: my welding skills were not up to the job and 2: welding on the wheels was not really recommended. So I decided to reproduce the original rivets. I bought the rivet and a rivet tool from McMaster-Carr. I also made a platform to support the wheel so I could work on it. The rivets I bought were 3/16 inch and the went in pretty well. Now they are off to Stockton wheel.

Ever since I saw Joe Fuch's truck and engine compartment, (You can see it here: Joe's 1937 Chevrolet 1/2 Ton Pick Up Truck) I have been looking for more aluminum accessory parts for my truck. Joe fabricated a bunch of his stuff and I won't be doing that, but I really liked his voltage regulator cover. Wouldn't you know it one came up on eBay and I got it. I quickly took it over to a restoration shop and they polished it for $20.00. I really need to learn how to do this. I must be able to do it cheaper? It turned out great and I think it will look great on the firewall.

Now I'm on the look out for a horn relay cover.
