My 1940 Chevy Restoration |
|
I bought this truck from Dave Draper near San Diego
CA. Dave had the truck listed on eBay. I contacted
him and we talked about the truck. I ended up buying the truck direct
from Dave. I had the truck transported
from California. It went pretty smoothly until the transport company
in New Jersey call on September 10th and said we like to deliver the
truck tomorrow. Well given the events of the following day, they never
made it into New York. We rescheduled and got it here a few days
after.
These are the pictures that were shown on ebay for the truck's listing. The first thing to do once I got the truck home was to get it running. It wanted to run but kept dying off high idle. I drained the gas tank. It was a mess. I cleared the fuel lines and went through the carb to make sure there wasn't a ton of junk in there. There was. Once that was all cleaned out it started and ran great. I ran it around the yard for a couple days. Everything was going great and then it just died. I mean died. The battery was dead, and nothing was going to get it going again. A next door neighbor helped get it back in the driveway. I decided right then a there to start on the project. The project is to create a near original looking truck with some minor improvements. I am a major originality freak and am surprised at my desire to modify the truck. Everything I do will be reversible. I am a believer in the theory that we don't own these vehicles we are their caretakers while in our possession. I want this truck to be representative of it's original design. I also want to be able to drive it above 45mph. I have the 3/4 ton for that. The major changes to the original truck will be upgrading to 12 volt electrics, open drive line, and a full pressure 235 engine. Some people would probably say those aren't even modifications. Well I am the nut that still has a 948cc engine in my 1960 Austin Healey Sprite and have trouble dealing with the fact they have HS2 carbs instead of the original H1carbs. The other changes I intend are some mild speed equipment additions to the engine. The first step in this project was to set my expectations down into the form of a project. I use Excel spreadsheets for this. I can email you the spreadsheet I use if you would like it. Click on Contact in the header. The project is going to be in three phases. Phase
