My 1940 Chevy Restoration

Phase 1 Page 2

Holy Cow I was right about the engine and transmission not being easy to remove. The clutch and brake pedal assembly alone was two days worth of staring and trying things. The pedals are actually mounted on the bell housing and transmission. To make that more complicated they come up through the floor boards, so all that had to be removed. All in all there were just a whole lot more things to remove than I thought possible.

The motor mounts are another thing. The transmission mounts came off OK, but the front engine mount is not cooperating. So that's were I am now. Trying to remove that.

From the back side.
Two days work?

Well I finally got the engine removed. I didn't get it done by the end of my last working season, the snow came and it took until this summer to get back at the truck. I spent the winter rebuilding two t5 transmissions. The engine finally came out after attacking the front motor mount with every tool I had. I can't believe I worked that long on it and didn't take any pictures.

Now that I have the engine out, I started looking at what on the front end needed doing before starting to put the front end back together. I started stripping the remaining components in front of the firewall. Well a funny thing happened on the way to the plan. It changed. I decided the right way to do this was to go straight down to the frame and get that right before starting the rebuild.

So I decided to keep stripping the frame. Once I had the front suspension and transmission out. It was as simple as removing the fenders, running boards, four bolts that hold the bed and six bolts that hold the cab.

After that the only things that remained were the rear axle, various fuel and brake lines and a couple miscellaneous things. So this working season is soon coming to an end with the plan of taking the frame out to be sand blasted and painted. I will then have a platform for rebuilding.

In the next segment I hope to have pictures of the disc brake conversion for the front and the dual master cylinder conversion.

Bad picture  but the engine is gone
The stripping continues
Just the cab and rear end to go.
Bad to the bone!
