"At least I didn't have to find a teenager to dress up as a chicken for this promotion. Remember the kid last summer who ended up tying a sacks of ice around his waist to keep him cool in the heavy suit?" Ali deGroot asked on a long distance phone call to her sister, Helen McBride.
"Isn't he the one who singed his tail feathers by getting too close to the barbecuing chickens they were selling?" Helen responded with a laugh.
Ali discovers Jase's deception and severs their relationship just before a near disaster strikes his company.
"Yeah. Compared to that, this promotion was effortless, and it was successful, too. All the actress I hired had to do was stand in front of the candy store in the mall and pass out a bunch of little bags of old-fashioned candy."
"If it's the really old-fashioned kind, save me some of those colorful sugar dots on the long strips of white paper. I love those things."
"You have weird tastes in food, sis," Ali replied. "I'll save you some strips, but when are you coming for a visit so you can eat them? You haven't even seen my new house, and I moved in just over two months ago."
"What's your neighborhood like?"
"Well, so far I like it. It's quiet and friendly, and I found a church that I feel at home in just three blocks away. The walk is a wonderful time to relax and think about more than my next promotion job."
"Sounds like God wants you to be there."
"Now if I could just have some quiet so I can finish my work at a reasonable hour and get sleep at night."
"You just said the neighborhood was quiet."
"It is except for the new neighbor who moved in next door about three weeks ago. He comes and goes at very odd hours. The women who pick him up at night pull into the driveway and beep their horn. But maybe I should be thankful he doesn't have kids who play loud music all the time."
"When you get to know his wife, maybe you can get her to stop the horn beeping."
"He doesn't have a wife--not one that I've seen anyway."
"Oh, really?" Helen said hopefully. "What's he like?"
"As a matter of fact, he's tall, good looking, and probably not more than a few years older than I am--thirty-five at the outside."
"Oh, really?" Helen asked raising her voice in more hopeful speculation.
Ali laughed. "Oh-oh, I'm sorry I mentioned him. Quit your matchmaking, Helen. I'm not ready to get involved with another man at this point. I don't bounce back very well after I've been lied to and stolen from when I thought I was on the way to being married in a church."
"Once Upon a Lie is light, human, and touching in its innocence. The characters are so real you would swear you know them. The situations grow logically, one out of the other. The descriptions, especially of the sweets, are mouth-wateringly good.
Thank you, Ms. Carroll for a read worth savoring--in many, many ways."
