In Overbyte:Karn Borden, a private investigator of white-collar computer crime, agrees to investigate industrial theft via computer at a friend's company. She faces her past as the owner's son, James, arouses feelings she has been trying to forget for eight years since she saw him last. James and Karn rekindle the attraction, but James can't come to terms with the dangers of her job. During the investigation, his actions put her in jeopardy as she faces a gun in the criminal's hands. When the gun goes off, their lives are changed forever. Will their love for each other be strong enough to heal the wounds? |
James slowly inched his way back into the line between the gun and Karn. "You knew the score, didn't you?"
"She loved you and you treated her like dirt," the man shouted, his hand holding the gun shaking. James' voice softened. "She had to find out on her own if that big beautiful crush she had on me could develop into something real and lasting. No, I didn't treat her badly. I loved her. I still love her more than anything. So you understand that I can't let you hurt her, don't you?"
James slowly turned his head to look back at Karn. The tears flowed unheeded down her cheeks as she stood staring at him. "God, Karn, didn't you know I love you?"
The back of James' fist came slashing upward as he whirled back toward the gun.
"Noooo," was all the sound Karn managed as she stepped forward, reaching to stop James from trying to fight with a man with a gun. She grabbed his coat but missed. Her fist closed around air.
When James' arm was in the air just inches from the gun, the Saturday Night Special fired.
The sharp retort echoed repeatedly in the large room.
"This book offers a reason for readers to love Lois Carroll's strong voice and sensual hero and heroine. Overbyte is full of characters so realistic, you feel as thought you've lived next door to them your entire life. Ms. Carroll has written a book that will bring tears, smiles, and a blissful sigh at the close of the last page. Four and a half stars.
